Camping is a lot of fun if you are well prepared.

For people who have never done any car camping before, I've put together a Car Camping Checklist to help you get started:

First Timers: Please feel free to post your questions here.

Experienced Campers: please help to answer questions from beginners.

Many Thanks Razz

Personal Gears:
-tent
-tarp
-hiking poles
-sleeping bags
-sleeping pad
-pillows
-daypack
-headlamp/flashlight
-backup batteries
-pocket knife
-toilet paper
-sunblock/hat
-bug spray/repellant
-camera
-first aid kit
-toothbrush/toothpaste
-sunglasses,
-a small quick dry towel
-bio-degradeable soap
-an extra pair of socks
-fleece hat and groves (night)

Group Gears:
-walkie-talkie
-aluminum foil for cooking
-stove, pots and pans
-utensils
-matches
-grill/charcoal/fluid
-coolers
-garbage bags
-games
-radio
-food/drinks

Q&A:
Q: Where can I buy my gears?
A: Warlmart, Target, Big 5, Sportmart, Sport Basement, Sports Authority are good places to start

Q: What if I don't want to spend the money on my first trip?
A: REI provide rental for most of gears.

Q: How about meals?
A: Oatmeal, muffin, toast are good idea for Breakfast. Sandwich, beef jerky, dries fruit are ideal for lunch, Nutrition bars or granola bars are also an option for lunch. You can treat yourself with hotdog, burger or steak for dinner, these are easy to cook on a campfire, or you can have instant noodle if you are lazy. Personally, I like hotpot for dinner.

Q: Where to keep the foods?
A: A cooler packed with ice cubes or cold packs will keep things properly chilled for 2 days

Q: Where can I get campfire wood?
A: Most campsites sell firewood between $6-8 per bundle, each bundle last 2-3 hours

During my trip, a copy of "2005 GEAR GUIDE" from BACKPACKER magazine kept me good company. Having not researched gears in a few years, this guide showed me some new material, technology and tricks.

For example, hiking poles can be used:
    - as tent poles for certain models of tent and bring down the tent weight to 12 oz.
    - with light weight shoes like trail runner, instead of old school thought that boots must heavy for heavy pack.
    - as a fishing pole by attaching fishing line and reel. I personally think only line, weight, hook and bait are necessary. In old days, fisherman didn't use reel which would add weight to your pack.

It has 1-page car camping packing list. But I could not find it in its web version http://www.gearfinder.com. You could sign up free for member, but it's not easy to navigate. However, you could select your spec and it would recommend the make/model for Pack/Boots/Tent/Sleeping Bag.

Your guys are too luxurious Evil or Very Mad

For a poor camper like me, my list is just 3 x (3+1):

- for camping, sleeping bag/pad/tent + headlamp
- for cooking, stove/pot/fuel + match
- for eating, instant noodle/egg/spinach + granola bar

For ppl who have never camped before, my suggestion would be at least prepare your sleeping bag (with temperature rating around or less than 30 degree F), and a sleeping pad. The pad is very necessary to keep you warm and comfortable. The cheapest you can find at Targets or Walmart for less than $10, basically just a roll of blue-colored hard foam. If you have a few more bucks, Targets sells $20 self-inflated one, or REI carries more expensive ones.

That would be your personal preference. I like Timberland because they last longer, and normally I get them from Gilroy Outlet.

It's important to pick a pair of shoes that fit your feet. You might get blister if the shoes either too big or too small, so bring your hiking socks with you when you shop for your hiking shoes.

I think toothbrush/toothpaste, sunglasses, a small quick dry towel, a small bio-degradeable soap, an extra pair of socks(keeping your feet dry is very important) and an interesting thin book to read should be added to the list. I pretty much took most stuff in your personal gear list for my backpacking trips except tarp, pillow, day pack and hiking poles. Even so, my pack was only about 25LB with food and cooking gears for a three-day trip -- of course I had to pay more for my light weight gears.

I learnt to bring a light weight fleece hat and groves when I backpacked at high altitude. Nights and early mornings can be as cold as low 40s even in summer in high mountains. And dress layered is the key to keep your trip more enjoyable.

Merrell hiking boots are very comfortable. I found I had never need to break in their boots. I wore brand new pairs for the halfdome hike twice( I didn't know anything about break-in shoes by then), and I didn't get any blister or bruise.
