We have reserved 3 permits for South Lake entrance to Dusy Basin on this Saturday. One dropped out and we need to have it filled.

Although I put starting 12PM Friday, our side is flexible. So we can leave lte in the afternoon, for example. We prefer a bit early though.

Dusy Basin is one of the best place for photography. 11000 feet with lakes/ponds/streams, and surrounded by several peaks around 14k feet high. Alpine glow is common in this area. It has been estimated that half people going there are photographers.

To reach there one hikes 6 miles from 10000 feet South Lake to 12000 feet Bishop Pass, and then 3 miles down to camp site at 11000 feet. Weather forecast says it will be sunny. So we do not expect heavy snow to close the pass when we return.

This backpacking trip is not for beginners. Here are the requirements:
1. Must feel comfortable carrying 40 pounds climbing over the 12000 feet Bishop Pass. And at this moment there can be ice/snow.
2. Must feel comfortable camping at 11000 feet. Night temperature can be freezing. Strong wind is also possible.

More requirements for non-photographer to join:
Must feel comfortable when the photographers spend hours looking for the right spot or wait for the right time to take an image. Scrambling around is not the purpose of this trip, though we may do some scrambling if that yields better image. We do not want to take an participant that acts alone once in Dusy Basin unless he/she can prove to me to be capable of that.

The organizer keep the right to choose a participant that is regarded as the most suitable to this trip. So this is not strictly 1st-come-1st-serve. If all the same then the 1st one has priority to take the spot.

Anybody joining this trip should be aware of the danger in big mountains, which we will not assume any responsibility if there are injuries or worse.

If you can go
and don't go
you will regret 555

As you reach the height
you will never dream
higher

In this evolution lake
Everything returns
to its origin

We were not able to cross Bishop Pass due to the snow. Trail was blocked and some scrambling was required. So we camped before the pass and made a day hike in the 2nd day. It was fun.

We can do a longer backpacking trip next time to cover evolution lake as well. Keep in touch,

When do you think the pass will be open?

When we hiked out we saw two rangers went in with shovels. So probably the pass is open now. Smile

However, for "being open" I mean there is no need to scramble over rocks. There are several sections of trail covered by ice and snow, but not steep or too dangerous. So people just walk over it. I do not think the two could have cleared all snow covered sections. For all snow to melt it might take 2 more weeks.

Wild flowers will be great by end of this month, I bet. They are pre-peak at about 10K now, and starting at 11K. And so is mosquitos.

Bring a fishing rod if you can. Golden trout is great.

In about 2 weeks? Ok, mark down my calendar. You think those wild flowers and trout will still be there at that time? And, preferably the mosquitoes will be gone:)

Mosquitos will be happy to meet you there. Swarms of them. Flowers will be better for sure. Trouts? I bet they will be there.
