Description:
Yes, that is the sun out there, it's actually not raining!! And it's going to be sunny this weekend!!! Take advantage of the expected nice weather and get motivated to work off all the extra weight from xmas, new yrs, new yrs again, etc.
This is pretty late notice, sorry about that. So let's do this - if we get more than 5 ppl by Friday noon (2/8), we'll go ahead with the hike, otherwise I'll postpone this to another weekend.
The hike itself should be very nice scenically (three sets of waterfalls, old growth redwoods, view of the ocean, etc) and at the same time present some elevation training, good for C2C, R2/3, Whitney, and other events. Most of the 15 miles on this hike will be fairly gentle ups/downs, but there is a stretch of about 2 miles where elevation gain is about 1000'/mi, i.e. like Mission Peak. The total elevation gain is significant: 3500' or so, but not to worry, it's spread over a lot of miles.
Here's map of the route. Click on the map to see photos from a previous hike with this route.
Items to bring:
* Hiking boots mandatory; hiking poles if you have them
* Hat, sunblock, sunglasses. (terrain will be mix of shade and open-space, with more shade than sun)
* 2 to 3 liter of liquids - 4 to 6 small bottles, half sports drinks.
* Convertible hiking pants or shorts, no jeans allowed!
* Light jacket
* Non-cotton shirts, including a short-sleeve
* Walkie-talkies if you have one (set code to 2-9)
* Headlamp in case we finish late
* Lunch, snacks. (it'll be a long hike, so bring ~1500 calories worth)
* Money (for carpool and dinner)
* Eat a hearty breakfast! Do not come empty-stomached!
* A sense of adventure.
NOTE: All who have not hiked with me before, please PM me and provide the following information:
1) Have you hiked 12+ miles & 3000' elevation gain at a moderate pace (2.5 - 3 mph) before? If not, what have you done?
2) Have you joined nphopper hikes or hikes from other groups in b.a.d before?
3) Do you have proper hiking gear? I.e. hiking boots, non-cotton shirts, hat, backpack, hiking poles, camelback's (for liquids), etc.
In order to make sure everyone enjoys the hike, I do require that you are in fairly good physical condition, work out regularly, are responsible and punctual, have the right equipment, etc. Thanks for your understanding.
Prelim schedule:
* 7:45 am carpool A (Sportsbasement, Sunnyvale)
* 8:00 am carpool B (Wells Fargo, downtown Saratoga)
* 9:00 am start hiking
* 1 pm lunch break
* 4 pm finish hike
* 5 pm return to carpool
* 5-6 pm optional dinner
Carpool location(s)
Note: Carpool A will meet first (7:45am) and then further consolidate with Carpool B (8:00 am).
Carpool A (7:40 am sharp, arrive 5 minute early) - Sunnyvale - Sports Basement.
* Carpool A (Sunnyvale) - Sports basement. 1177 Kern Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94085.
* Please park behind the store against the fence next to Lawrence. This means drive into the parking and go to the end and right turn to circle to the back of the store.
Carpool B (8:00 am sharp, please arrive 5 min early) - Saratoga - Wells Fargo.
* Carpool B (Saratoga) - Wells Fargo parking lot. 14428 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, CA.
* Carpool B should be used by folks from SF/north.
* To reduce pollution, carpool is mandatory!!
* Be punctual, be early! We don't wait past the stated times, and I do give out "No Show" marks. The stated times are for when we leave carpool locations, so get there a few minutes early.

--This post reserved for updates--
Update #1 (2/7 7pm)
* Added two rsvp options for preference of Saturday vs Sunday.
Update #2 (2/8 10:30am)
* Looks like the hike'll be on saturday
* The starting time has been moved back a little (7:45 am now at carpool A - sunnyvale)
* Added a second carpool location (B) in Saratoga's Wells Fargo parking lot. Folks from SF/north should go to this location directly. It'll be about same distance/time as for you to get to carpool A, but gives you a bit more time to sleep since meeting time for B is later (8 am).
Update #3 (2/8 8:32 pm)
* Realizing that this event was posted pretty late, I'll understand if you need to cancel last minute. Please don't cancel your rsvp yourself, you'll get a late-cancel mark. Instead, leave me a email message by 11:59 pm tonight, or leave me a voice message by tomorrow 7 am. Then I'll know not to expect you. Thanks!

Added carpool B (Wells Fargo, Saratoga) for 8 am - good for folks from far away, i.e. SF. Please update your rsvp accordingly (see last rsvp option). Carpool A now meet at 7:45 am.
As this is a long hike, we cannot start any later at trailhead than 9am, so please be on time at the carpool locations (7:45 & 8 am).
I hope everyone is ready for a brisk-speed hike, other than slowing down a bit around the waterfalls, I'd like to keep a good pace on this hike as a lot of us need training for other more difficult events coming up.
That said, I'm well aware that unforseen circumstances could come up, and so do have some contingency plans in mind already - that is, should we need to cut short the hike, split up, etc, so don't worry too much.
If you haven't driven to Big Basin before, it is one interesting ride with lots of winding roads. It will take an hour from Saratoga. I will need some drivers, so keep this in mind as you head to the carpools. Thanks for your cooperation!

It's been quite a while since we've had a mystery hike. The sky finally cleared up this weekend and 13 hikers (including 5 newcomers) headed to Big Basin Redwoods State Park for a rigorous workout among the giant redwoods. This 15 mile hike starts from headquarters and traces the Sunset trail to Berry Creek Falls trail where we passed three sets of beautiful waterfalls: Golden cascades, Silver Falls, and the mos famous of the three: Berry Creek Falls. Most hikers would then take the Skyline to the Sea trail back to headquarters, making it an approx 10 mile hike, but our plan was to go further south towards Waddell beach, and then hike up the very steep and partially exposed (sunny) McCrary trail up to Wheat Overlook, then Hinh Hammond Rd back to the parking.
11 of us followed the plan (see map) while two took a slightly shorter loop after Berry Creek Falls through Howard King Trail and reunited with the main group at the Wheat Overlook. The newcomers were all on-time for the carpools (thank you again!) and were well-prepared (food, drinks, hiking poles, clothing), and endured the hike like old-timers. It was a really nice hike through beautiful scenaries and under sunny and warm conditions (high 50's to mid 60's).

Thanks everyone for joining this hike, another mystery solved. Your comments are welcomed.
